Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Wednesday that Tokyo condemns Iran’s actions that threaten regional stability, including Tehran’s remarks about a potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Motegi noted that the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial route for global oil shipments, making any threats to its security a matter of international concern.
Until now, Japan had urged Iran to avoid destabilizing moves following the US and Israeli strikes, but had avoided using the term “condemn” in official statements.
In phone talks with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Motegi reported that civilian vessels have been attacked in the strait and nearby waters.
He added that retaliatory strikes by Iran have targeted diplomatic and civilian facilities in Qatar and other neighboring countries, resulting in civilian casualties.
The Japanese minister stressed the need to prevent further escalation and protect civilians in the region.
Al-Thani expressed his hope to work with Japan to calm tensions and restore peace and stability in the Gulf.
Officials said both countries agreed to maintain dialogue and coordinate monitoring efforts to address ongoing security concerns.
