For actress Janella Salvador, landing the role of Charlie in Open Endings is nothing short of a dream come true. The film, one of the official entries in the 2025 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, finally gave her the chance to portray a queer character—something she has long wished for in her career.

Speaking at the recent Star Magic Spotlight press conference, Salvador shared her excitement about being part of the project. “I know I’ve said this so many times, but this is really a dream come true. I’ve been very vocal for years about wanting to be part of a queer project, and now it’s finally happening—and in Cinemalaya, no less,” she said.

The actress described Open Endings as a sapphic film that centers on the lives of four ex-lovers who remain friends. “What makes it refreshing is that it’s not a typical coming-out story or a rom-com. It’s really about women—their friendship, their perspectives—and of course, the dynamics of the queer community,” Salvador explained.

She added that the timing of the project could not be more perfect for her. “I’m at a stage in my career where I want to grow as an actress and do more films. When this came along, I was overjoyed.”

Open Endings will screen at Cinemalaya 21 from October 3 to 12 at the Red Carpet Cinemas, Shangri-La Plaza, the festival’s main venue.

Beyond the festival, Salvador has a full plate of upcoming projects. She is set to star in ABS-CBN’s thriller series What Lies Beneath, alongside Charlie Dizon, Kaila Estrada, Sue Ramirez, Jake Cuenca, and JM de Guzman. In the show, she takes on the challenging role of a mother entangled in a murder mystery. “It’s my first time working with Charlie, Sue, and Kaila. They’re all such talented actresses, and the energy on set is amazing,” she said.

Salvador is also balancing her music career. While busy with acting, she revealed that she is slowly putting together a new album. “Singing has always been my first love, and acting is something I learned to love deeply. I’m working on an album—it’s been a long process, especially with my schedule, but I want to make sure I give my best in both music and acting.”

More than a decade into the industry, Salvador continues to push herself to take on more demanding roles and creative challenges. With Open Endings, a new TV drama, and a music project in the works, she is embracing this phase of her career with renewed passion and determination.
