ILOILO CITY – The provincial government on Friday turned over career guidance instructional module (CGIM) sets to 80 public secondary schools across Iloilo province.
The modules aim to equip junior and senior high school learners in making educated career decisions aligned with their profiles and expose them to the relevant labor market.
The initiative sis the localized implementation of Republic Act No. 11206, or the Secondary Schools Career Guidance and Counseling, with Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. as the principal author when he was still at the House of Representatives.
“We are the first to do this in the whole country. We are doing this because it provides that we will develop a career guidance instructional module together with the other relevant departments of the government,” Defensor said in a media interview following the turnover ceremony at Pavia National High School.
Each set contains structured lesson guides, learner activities, assessment tools and facilitation notes to enable teachers, guidance counselors and career advocates to deliver guidance sessions for Grades 7 to 12.
The modules cover career self-assessment, labor market information, education pathways and decision-making skills.
“We want an educational system starting at the secondary level to produce the human resources needed by the government and the economy. That’s what this is all about, very fundamental,” he said.
The modules will be rolled out starting next school year. In the past months, career advocates and guidance counselors were trained to be familiar with the modules.
Defensor said he is open to the replication of the module in other parts of the country.
Department of Education (DepEd) Director for Western Visayas Cristito Eco thanked Defensor for his commitment to the utilization of the materials.
“Eto na ang material na angkop para sa ating career guidance advocates, maging guide nila (These materials are appropriate for our career guidance advocates, to be their guide) on how we are going to ensure that our learners are guided on what’s the best career for them in relation to the demand of the industry, demand of the government, among others,” he said.
The CGIM is a flagship education support initiative under the Bulig Eskwela sang Probinsya (BESProbins) Program of the provincial government.
It was developed in partnership with guidance counselors and education specialists from the DepEd Iloilo and the University of the Philippines Visayas. (PNA)
