Improved road and solar lights make cape Bojeador Lighthouse safer, more accessible

A trip to the historic Cape Bojeador lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte is now safer and more convenient following the completion of a new access road and the installation of 29 solar-powered streetlights.

“This upgrade, spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Ilocos Norte First District Engineering Office, significantly enhances nighttime safety and convenience for both locals and tourists,” said Esperanza Tinaza, DPWH Region information officer.

Funded by around PHP4.7 million from the 2025 General Appropriations Act, the project replaced the previously narrow and steep two-lane road with an improved path, accompanied by environment-friendly lighting.

As part of the Marcos administration’s push for road safety and sustainable infrastructure, engineer Glenn Miguel and the DPWH–Ilocos Norte First Engineering District led the initiative.

Tinaza said the road and solar lighting enhancements not only boost safety but also provide the surrounding community with a clean and reliable light source—reducing accidents and improving quality of life.

“As a landmark of Spanish-colonial architecture and a major tourist attraction in Ilocos Norte, Cape Bojeador lighthouse holds a historical and cultural value that continues to captivate both domestic and international visitors,” she added.

The DPWH emphasized the project’s alignment with goals of sustainable infrastructure, clean energy, and inclusive development for Burgos and the wider Ilocos Norte region.

Previously, locals used kerosene lamps when heading out to fish at night, risking their health and safety. Now, they feel much safer.

“We are thankful for the project. We feel safer now with a well-lit road when we pass by the Burgos lighthouse,” said Jaycris Dugay, a resident of Brgy. Bayog in Burgos.
