Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday said the death of Iloilo Vice Mayor Aimee Paz Lamasan resulted from an accidental gun discharge.
Remulla, speaking after visiting Lamasan’s wake, noted that the vice mayor was a gun enthusiast and owned 10 registered firearms.
During a reenactment of the incident, he said Lamasan’s partner, John Byron Torrecarion, asked her if she wanted to attach optics to her firearm, which is known for its light trigger.
“When it was opened, she picked it up in the wrong way, which resulted in an accidental firing entering her abdomen with a hollow-point bullet,” Remulla said, describing the injuries as severe with fragments remaining inside her body.
The DILG chief stressed that Lamasan was not linked to municipal flood control projects and that there were no indications of depression, ruling out suicide or homicide.
Investigation continues as authorities, including the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Police Regional Office 6, will review medical reports, crime lab results, and witness statements to confirm all angles of the case.
The incident occurred on the morning of December 30 at Lamasan’s residence in Puerto Real Subdivision, La Paz, Iloilo City; she was taken to St. Paul’s Hospital and died the following day.
