Iloilo City honors Teresita Sy-Coson as adopted daughter and honorary Mayor

The city government of Iloilo conferred the title of Adopted Daughter and the distinction of second Honorary Mayor on Teresita Sy-Coson, vice chairperson of SM Investments Corporation and chairperson of BDO Unibank, during a ceremony on Thursday.

Mayor Jerry Treñas, along with incoming mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu and members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, presented the honors, highlighting Sy-Coson’s significant contributions to the city’s economic development. “As a key figure in SM Investments Corporation, one of the largest conglomerates in the Philippines, her influence and contributions to Iloilo City’s development have paved the way for further investments, drawing the attention of visionaries and entrepreneurs alike,” he stated.

Sy-Coson’s title as Adopted Daughter was established under Executive Order (EO) 114, signed by Treñas on August 20, 2024, while EO 042, dated May 14, 2025, designated her as the second Honorary Mayor of Iloilo City.

The relationship between SM and Iloilo began with the opening of its first mall outside Manila on Delgado Street, followed by the establishment of SM City Iloilo in 1999. Since then, SM’s presence has expanded to include BPO offices, banks, and residential developments, such as the Kauswagan Residences — Iloilo’s first vertical socialized housing project.

Sy-Coson, who has been visiting Iloilo for nearly 50 years, expressed her commitment to continued investment and community support, referring to Iloilo as “one of the main cities we have adopted.” She acknowledged the progress made under Mayor Treñas, stating, “Through the years, I have seen how Mayor Treñas has been able to develop Iloilo, and we really appreciate what is here. And we are ever ready to support the mayor on the endeavor.”
