Floodwaters receded in several parts of Iloilo City, but more than 1,600 residents remained in evacuation centers after intense rains from the southwest monsoon inundated dozens of barangays.

The city’s Emergency Operations Center said 517 families, or 1,679 individuals, were still staying in evacuation facilities as of Tuesday.

At the height of the flooding, 1,056 families or 3,216 people from 65 barangays were affected, with water in some areas reaching knee to chest level.

The EOC said flooding had already subsided in 14 barangays, while 51 communities continued to experience varying water levels.

Local rain gauges recorded extremely heavy rainfall, including rates of around 70 millimeters per hour and accumulated totals of about 160 to 165 mm within six hours.

The city government activated response teams for food and non-food assistance, evacuation center management and protection of displaced families.

Health personnel also monitored possible cases of waterborne diseases, influenza-like illnesses, leptospirosis and dengue. Doxycycline was distributed to 2,484 individuals, while 200 additional doses were set aside for responders.

Police and search-and-rescue teams remained on standby for possible evacuations and emergency assistance, while mobile patrol units continued monitoring flood-prone areas and key roads.
