Veteran actor Sam Neill, globally recognized for his legendary role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has landed in the Philippines to begin work on a new international project—The Last Resort, a romantic drama set against the vibrant backdrop of the Philippine islands.

Neill, now 76, expressed excitement over returning to the country after nearly five decades. “It’s been since 1976—way too long. I was filming a documentary back then,” he shared during a sit-down interview with News5. “Now I’m back, and it’s thrilling. You never quite know what an adventure like this will bring, but that’s part of the fun.”

The Last Resort tells the story of Brooke, played by Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley, a determined heiress who embarks on a journey to prove herself by developing a luxury resort in the Philippines. Along the way, she crosses paths with Ben (Alden Ehrenreich), a free-spirited pilot whose love for the islands inspires her to reconnect with herself, and question what truly matters in life. Neill’s role in the film remains under wraps, but sources suggest he plays a pivotal character with deep local ties.

With a screenplay penned by Karen McCullah (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You) and direction by rom-com veteran Donald Petrie (Miss Congeniality, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), the film promises a blend of heart, humor, and cultural depth.

But The Last Resort is more than just a love story. It’s also a cinematic love letter to the Philippines. From the powder-white beaches of Palawan to the bustling street scenes of Manila, the film showcases the country’s natural beauty, local traditions, and culinary richness.

“There’s something magical about this place,” Ehrenreich shared in a prior interview with entertainment reporter MJ Marfori. “We shot across different islands, experienced traditional dances, and tried incredible food. It’s a movie that lets the Philippines shine—and lets audiences fall in love with it just like our characters do.”

Backing the film is a powerhouse production team led by executive producer Manuel V. Pangilinan. Ernesto “Bong” Sta. Maria Jr., Raja Collins, Simon Heo, Akshay Mehta, and Rick Dugdale round out the producing lineup, aiming to bridge Hollywood storytelling with Filipino culture on a global stage.

For Neill, whose career spans everything from blockbusters like Thor: Love and Thunder to acclaimed dramas like Sweet Country, the project is a continuation of his passion for storytelling with substance.

“I’ve always believed great stories can happen anywhere,” Neill noted. “And in this case, it’s happening in a place that’s brimming with life, color, and warmth. I’m lucky to be a part of that.”

As cameras roll and the islands become a living, breathing character in the story, The Last Resort is shaping up to be a celebration of rediscovery, both personal and cultural—with Sam Neill at the heart of it.
