After its phenomenal trend during the COVID-19 pandemic, Phasmophobia is set to bring fear to the big screen. Kinetic Games announced on June 4 that their game’s film adaptation is now underway through a partnership with Blumhouse, a Hollywood-based horror movie production.

“It’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting,” said Daniel Knight, Kinetic Games’ Director and Phasmophobia’s Lead Developer.

Blumhouse also mentioned earlier, during their 15th anniversary celebration event, The Business of Fear, that director James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, is collaborating with Kinetic Games on the project.

Phasmophobia is an online first-person and four-player psychological horror game made by British indie-game developer Kinetic Games Limited in 2020. The gameplay focuses on a team of paranormal investigators exploring haunted locations with the main objectives to resolve the mystery behind a specific case using various ghost-hunting equipment, all while surviving encounters with 24 different types of Ghosts.

Since its early access release, the game quickly gained massive popularity within the gaming community, especially among Twitch and YouTube game streamers. It later won multiple achievements, including the “Best Debut Game” award at The Game Awards 2020, and has since surpassed 23 million sales worldwide.

Other details regarding the official cast and final release date for the Phasmophobia movie are yet to be revealed.

Phasmophobia marks Blumhouse’s second film adaptation of a horror game, after Five Nights at Freddy’s in 2023.
