The southwest monsoon is continuing to affect large parts of Luzon and the Visayas on Sunday, bringing rain showers and thunderstorms even after Tropical Storm Inday moved out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
In its latest forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro could experience periods of rain due to the enhanced habagat.
Weather forecasters warned that moderate to heavy rainfall in these areas may trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in vulnerable communities.
Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, and the Visayas were also expected to see cloudy skies accompanied by scattered rains and thunderstorms caused by the southwest monsoon.
In Mindanao, conditions were generally expected to remain partly cloudy to cloudy, with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms developing because of localized weather systems.
Pagasa also reported rough sea conditions over Extreme Northern Luzon, where strong southwesterly winds were generating waves reaching as high as four meters.
Elsewhere in Luzon and the Visayas, seas were forecast to range from moderate to rough, while moderate coastal waters were expected across Mindanao.
Although Inday had already exited the country’s area of responsibility on Saturday, Pagasa said the monsoon’s effects would only gradually weaken. The agency is also monitoring a low-pressure area east of Eastern Visayas, although it currently has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone and is not expected to affect the country in the immediate term.
