A familiar rivalry takes center stage as San Miguel Beer and Meralco square off in a high-stakes showdown that will shape the final playoff seedings in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup.
The reigning champions Beermen face the dethroned Bolts in the 7:30 p.m. main game on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, part of the penultimate playdate of the elimination round. At stake is more than pride. San Miguel is chasing the No. 1 seed, while Meralco is fighting to finish strong at 7-4 and keep its hopes of a Top Four spot alive.
San Miguel enters the matchup at 8-2, already assured of no worse than second place, but clearly unwilling to ease off the accelerator. After stumbling to an uncharacteristic 0-2 start, the Beermen have caught fire, reeling off eight straight wins and reasserting themselves as the team to beat.
Their surge continued in emphatic fashion with a 135-115 demolition of Terrafirma, a victory that locked in a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals. Coach Leo Austria took full advantage of the margin, rotating all 15 players to spread minutes and sharpen the entire roster heading into the playoffs.
“This is a good development for us because it’s our goal from the start, to make it to the Top Four,” Austria said, underscoring the importance of momentum with one elimination game still to play.
Meralco, meanwhile, comes in with urgency and confidence of its own. The Bolts are very much in the hunt for the Magic Four, riding a three-game winning streak that has revived their campaign. Dominant wins over Terrafirma (120-87), Phoenix Super LPG (88-78), and Converge (105-84) have pulled them back into contention after a shaky stretch.
At 6-4, coach Luigi Trillo’s squad is tied for fifth with Magnolia and Barangay Ginebra, just half a game behind fourth-place Converge at 7-4. The path is narrow, but clear: keep winning and let the standings fall where they may.
Adding extra bite to the matchup is recent history. San Miguel and Meralco have split the last two All-Filipino crowns, turning every meeting into a personal affair and ensuring Friday’s clash will carry a playoff-like edge.
“Our goal is to win,” Trillo said simply. “Wherever that brings us, we’ll take it.”
With seeding implications, a twice-to-beat incentive hanging in the balance, and a rivalry still simmering, this late-elimination duel promises intensity well beyond the calendar.
