Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells stretchered off after scary fall against Hornets

A frightening scene unfolded Tuesday night in Charlotte as Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells was stretchered off the court following a violent fall during a fast break.

Midway through the second quarter, Wells had a clear path to the basket after breaking ahead of the Hornets’ defense. As he rose for what looked like an uncontested dunk, Charlotte rookie KJ Simpson collided with him mid-air, taking out Wells’ legs from underneath. The result was a brutal fall that saw Wells land hard on his back.

Simpson, visibly shaken, immediately checked on Wells, who remained motionless as trainers rushed to the scene. The Spectrum Center fell eerily quiet, the silence underscoring the seriousness of the moment. Officials reviewed the play and issued Simpson a Flagrant 2 foul for “unnecessary and excessive contact,” leading to his automatic ejection.

Wells was eventually wheeled off the court with his head and neck secured, drawing a respectful round of applause from the crowd. He raised his hand slightly while being taken into the tunnel—a hopeful sign amid the uncertainty.

Later in the game, Wells’ father, Fred, shared that his son was “awake and alert,” though dealing with pain in his jaw, back, and wrist. Medical staff confirmed a broken wrist, and he was set to undergo further scans to assess the extent of his injuries.

Before the injury, Wells had been one of the brightest surprises of the NBA’s rookie class. A second-round pick out of Washington State (after beginning his college career at Division II Sonoma State), he had defied expectations by earning a key rotation spot on a competitive Memphis team.

Known primarily for his defensive tenacity, Wells had even garnered early Rookie of the Year buzz—an impressive feat for a player taken 39th overall. In a season filled with ups and downs for the Grizzlies, his emergence had been a major positive.

Now, all eyes are on his recovery. While the hope is that the injury won’t hinder his long-term trajectory, the Grizzlies and their fans are left holding their breath for one of their most promising young talents.
