The Memphis Grizzlies’ preseason optimism took a hit after star guard Ja Morant suffered a left ankle sprain during team practice on Sunday, sidelining him indefinitely as the team begins its tune-up games.
Head coach Tuomas Iisalo described the incident as a “routine basketball play gone wrong,” emphasizing that the team is taking a cautious, week-to-week approach. “It’s the preseason, so we’re not rushing anything,” Iisalo said before Monday’s exhibition opener against the Detroit Pistons. “Our focus is having him fully ready when it matters most.”
Morant’s absence adds to Memphis’ growing list of unavailable players, which includes All-Star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. and rookie center Zach Edey. Jackson is reportedly targeting a return by opening night on October 22, when the Grizzlies host the New Orleans Pelicans.
The injury comes as Morant attempts to reestablish consistency after two turbulent seasons marred by suspensions and various ailments. Since 2021, the explosive guard has played in barely half of Memphis’ games, missing extended stretches that have repeatedly disrupted the team’s chemistry and playoff rhythm.
Despite the setback, the Grizzlies remain hopeful. Team insiders say Morant’s ankle sprain is not severe, and his rehabilitation has already begun. Still, Memphis is bracing for a careful recovery timeline—mindful that their postseason ambitions hinge on having their franchise cornerstone healthy for the long haul.
For Memphis, preseason patience may be the first test of the season’s endurance.
