Grace Poe welcomes extended MRT-3, LRT-1 hours

Senator Grace Poe praised the extension of operating hours for Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit-1 (LRT-1), saying it benefits workers rushing to catch the last train home.

“The extended operating hours bring relief to our commuters who often have to race against time to make the last trip,” Poe stated.

With the ongoing Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) rehabilitation pushing more people to use public transport, she also urged authorities to enhance commuter support with better security, help desks, and well-maintained facilities.

Starting Wednesday, Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) extended LRT-1’s weekday operations by 30 minutes. The last train from Dr. Santos station in Parañaque now departs at 10:30 p.m., while the final northbound trip from Fernando Poe Jr. station (formerly Roosevelt) leaves at 10:45 p.m.

MRT-3 also began its extended weekday schedule on March 24. The last southbound train from North Avenue now departs at 10:30 p.m., while the final northbound trip from Taft Avenue leaves at 11:09 p.m.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced the deployment of additional trains during peak hours to ease congestion, especially amid the transport strike by Manibela.

While acknowledging that Metro Manila’s transit system still needs improvement, Poe said small measures like this bring the country closer to efficient public transportation. “A progressive nation isn’t defined by car ownership but by a public transport system that serves everyone, including the wealthy,” she added.
