President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Thursday that his administration would neither stop nor help the International Criminal Court’s Investigation into the supposed crimes against humanity committed by former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
In the 11th congressional hearing on Wednesday, Duterte urged the ICC “to hurry up” and investigate him.
The Philippines is not a member of the ICC. Duterte had withdrawn the country’s membership in 2019 when the court began investigating the extrajudicial killings during his administration.
“We do not cooperate with the ICC; that is the position of this government,” Marcos said. “If ‘yun ang gugustuhin ni PRRD, eh hindi naman kami haharang dun sa ICC. Hindi lang kami tutulong,” (If that is what Duterte wants, we will not block the ICC. But we will not help.)
Marcos stated that the Philippines would not cooperate with the ICC, but emphasized that the country has obligations with Interpol.
“Kung pumapayag siya na makipag-usap o magpa-imbestiga sa ICC, nasa kaniya ‘yun. Wala kaming desisyon doon,” he added. (If Duterte agrees to talk to them or be investigated, it is up to him. We do not make that decision.)
