The National Innovation Council (NIC) has approved the creation of a technical working group tasked with evaluating the Philippines’ current artificial intelligence (AI) landscape and shaping its future trajectory.
In a statement released Friday, the NIC said the decision was made during its eighth council meeting on March 26. The initiative is seen as a crucial step toward crafting informed and forward-looking AI policies for the country.
The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) noted that the newly formed think tank will conduct in-depth studies on the Philippines’ readiness for AI adoption and integration. Insights from this group are expected to guide the government in developing a cohesive national AI strategy.
Leading the initiative is the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), supported by experts from various sectors including industry, academia, and government institutions.
NEDA Secretary and NIC vice chairperson Arsenio Balisacan emphasized the urgency of a unified national approach to AI.
“To truly unlock the potential of AI, we need a strategic policy framework that fosters coordination between the public and private sectors,” Balisacan said. “Just as importantly, we must equip our workforce with the skills necessary to adapt and thrive in an AI-driven world.”
A 2023 study by Google and Access Partnership estimated that AI and digital skill development could contribute as much as P2.8 trillion annually to the Philippine economy by 2030, underscoring the massive potential of AI-driven innovation.
Alongside the formation of the AI technical group, the NIC also approved updated implementing guidelines for the 2025 Innovation Grants. These revised guidelines outline the types of projects eligible for funding, along with detailed criteria and requirements.
Since 2022, the Innovation Grants have supported initiatives across sectors such as agriculture, health, energy, education, defense, transportation, and public administration. The updated guidelines are expected to be released by NEDA in the second quarter of 2024, followed shortly by a call for proposals.
“These new developments represent a major leap in strengthening our innovation ecosystem,” Balisacan added. “The AI working group and updated grant guidelines bring us closer to a more dynamic, responsive, and future-ready Philippines.”
The initiatives align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision for a whole-of-nation innovation strategy, aimed at building a resilient and inclusive future for all Filipinos.
