Filipino Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. placed fourth in the Premier division of the O2C Doeberl Cup Chess Championships, held April 17–21 in Canberra, Australia.
Antonio, 63, finished with 6.5 points, tying with Australian GM Zhao Zong-Yuan and Polish GM Jacek Stopa, but landed fourth after the tiebreak.
Indian GM Guha Mitrabha topped the tournament with 7.5 points, while fellow Indian Das Sayantan placed second with 7.0 points.
“I would like to dedicate my victory to my family, my friends and to God,” Antonio said in an interview on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Antonio also secured second place in the rapid event of the Melbourne International Open Chess Championships on April 11.
Meanwhile, Filipino player Jose Efren Bagamasbad finished 35th with 4.0 points in the FIDE Standard division.
Both Antonio and Bagamasbad are set to compete in the Sydney International Open from April 23 to 27, and later in the FIDE World Seniors Chess Championships from October 20 to November 2 in Puglia, Italy.
