Barangay Ginebra and Blackwater enter Friday night’s PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup matchup with the same mission: bounce back before an early losing skid turns into a bigger problem.
Both teams are coming off heartbreaking defeats and will be eager to return to the win column when they square off at 7:30 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Group B action.
For Ginebra, the challenge is even greater as it continues to play without franchise stars Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson. The Gin Kings suffered an 81-78 loss to Phoenix in their previous outing despite a spectacular debut from import Riley Grigsby, who erupted for 42 points and 13 rebounds.
Grigsby nearly carried Ginebra to victory single-handedly, but the locals failed to provide enough offensive support. Jeremiah Gray paced the team’s Filipino contingent with just nine points on an inefficient 3-of-14 shooting, while RJ Abarrientos chipped in eight points on 3-of-16 shooting. Gray’s potential game-winning four-point attempt at the buzzer also came up short.
The absence of Brownlee and Thompson was evident, leaving the Gin Kings lacking their usual firepower and leadership in crucial moments. With an 0-1 record, Ginebra cannot afford to fall deeper into the standings early in the tournament.
Blackwater, meanwhile, is looking to quickly move on from a painful 116-114 loss to Meralco that snapped its unbeaten start.
The Bossing showed tremendous grit after climbing back from an 18-point deficit behind Sedrick Barefield’s 29-point explosion and RK Ilagan’s 20-point effort. Ilagan tied the game at 114-all late in the fourth quarter before Meralco star Chris Newsome delivered the game-winning basket.
Despite the defeat, Blackwater earned praise for its resilience.
“You have to give Blackwater credit. We’re up 18 but they have no quit,” Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo said. “And that’s a testament to what coach Pat Aquino has been doing there. They’re playing really well.”
Import Kentrell Barkley added 28 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort as Blackwater proved it has the talent and toughness to compete against the league’s top teams.
Friday’s showdown presents an opportunity for both squads to regain momentum. Ginebra hopes its supporting cast finally steps up to complement Grigsby’s scoring brilliance, while Blackwater aims to turn its fighting spirit into a crucial victory.
With both teams desperate to avoid back-to-back losses, expect an intense battle where urgency could bring out the best in both sides.
