Gilas Pilipinas Women put themselves back on the brink of Southeast Asian basketball supremacy, overpowering defending champion Indonesia, 66–55, to book a return trip to the gold medal match of the 33rd SEA Games on Thursday at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.
This was not merely a semifinal victory. It was a statement of intent from a Philippine squad determined to reclaim what slipped away two years ago.
From the opening tip, Gilas imposed its will. A blistering first-quarter surge set the tone, as the Filipinas dictated the pace, controlled the paint, and suffocated Indonesia’s offensive rhythm. By the time the opening period ended, the Philippines had already seized momentum—and never let it go.
Leading the charge was Kacey dela Rosa, whose all-around dominance anchored Gilas on both ends of the floor. She delivered 21 points and 11 rebounds while protecting the rim with four blocks and disrupting passing lanes with four steals, a performance that underscored her growing stature as one of the region’s most complete bigs.
Afril Bernardino provided steady support, chipping in 14 points with timely stops on defense, while Janine Pontejos added perimeter scoring and veteran poise as the Filipinas steadily widened the gap. Gilas’ balance, depth, and defensive discipline proved too much for an Indonesian side that entered the game carrying the confidence of a reigning champion.
By halftime, the Philippines had stretched the lead to its widest at 37–18, effectively placing Indonesia in catch-up mode for the rest of the contest. Though the Indonesians attempted to claw back behind aggressive drives and second-chance efforts, Gilas remained composed, closing out the game with control and maturity.
Head coach Patrick Aquino acknowledged the significance of the win, noting the challenge posed by Indonesia’s championship pedigree while emphasizing his team’s collective resolve. The victory sends Gilas to the gold medal match, where it will face either host Thailand or Malaysia.
For Team Philippines, the stakes are clear. After settling for silver in Cambodia in 2023, the Filipinas are now one win away from capturing their third women’s basketball gold medal in the last four SEA Games editions—a chance at redemption, and a reminder that the region’s throne is still very much within reach.
One more game stands between Gilas Women and the ultimate prize.
