Georgia has opened an investigation into two nationwide power outages that disrupted electricity across the country, with authorities looking into the possibility of sabotage.
The State Security Service said the inquiry was being conducted under a provision of the country’s criminal code covering acts that disrupt critical infrastructure and threaten state interests.
Officials did not disclose any suspects or evidence linking the outages to deliberate actions, saying the investigation remains ongoing.
The first blackout occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, affecting large parts of the country, according to the Georgian State Electrosystem.
A second outage followed on Saturday morning before electricity service was restored nationwide a little over two hours later.
The state-run transmission operator said technicians were still working to determine what caused the repeated disruptions.
Authorities said they would release additional information as the investigation progresses and more details become available.
The outages drew national attention as Georgia sought to identify the source of the disruptions and prevent similar incidents from affecting the country’s power grid.
