From Ronaldo to ‘ate Cory,’ a Filipina nanny accidentally outshines a global football icon

Image shows two photos: on the left, a man in a white shirt and another in a black jacket posing together with thumbs up; on the right, a man and a woman smiling, the woman holding a birthday cake with candles.

In a twist that delighted Filipinos across the globe, a Filipina housekeeper in the United Kingdom has unexpectedly outperformed one of the biggest names in world sports on social media — and even British broadcaster Piers Morgan couldn’t believe it.

The unlikely star? Maria “Cory” Flor, a longtime nanny and housekeeper in Morgan’s household.

The global icon she edged out? None other than Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo — widely regarded as one of the greatest players in history and currently the most-followed human on Instagram with 671 million followers.

Yet when Morgan compared birthday posts he made for both, the numbers told a surprising story.

“So, this is hilarious,” Morgan wrote on Instagram on February 27, 2026.

“Three weeks ago, I did a post wishing my friend @cristiano a happy birthday. It got 1.4m views and 102k ‘likes’ as befits the world’s most followed Instagram star.

“This week, I did a post wishing my housekeeper @maricor_flor a happy birthday and it’s had 13 million views and 184k ‘likes’.”

The difference was staggering: 13 million views for Cory versus 1.4 million for Ronaldo. More likes, too.

Morgan joked about what the numbers appeared to suggest.

“Which seems to suggest Cory is 9 times as big a star as Cristiano, and nearly twice as well liked.. She’s been all over Philippines media…”

For Filipinos, however, the reaction was anything but random. It was personal.

Cory has worked for Morgan’s family for 16 years — a detail he emphasized in his birthday tribute.

“Happy 40th birthday to the wonderful Cory… our family’s incredibly loyal and hard-working cleaner, nanny, housekeeper and all round Ms Fixit for the past 16 years.

“The pride of the Philippines who never looks a day older (the 2nd pic was in 2014)!
Thanks for everything you do for us, Cory.”

The warmth of the message resonated deeply with many Filipinos, particularly overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who saw in Cory a reflection of their own sacrifices, dedication, and quiet contributions in households around the world.

Morgan admitted he had begun feeling the ripple effects of her viral fame.

“…and I’ve even had Filipinos stopping me in the street in London to ask me to say happy birthday to her.”

He added with a laugh: “Only a matter of time before we’re out together and someone asks me to do a selfie of them with Cory. Or worse, we’re with Cristiano and they ask him to do it… !”

Meanwhile, Morgan’s birthday message to Ronaldo was equally glowing:

“Happy 41st Birthday @cristiano – the greatest footballer in history… still scoring goals, still breaking records, still burning with ferociously competitive desire. He’s also an incredibly genuine guy.”

At press time, the post featuring Cory had reached around 190,000 likes, compared to roughly 103,000 for Ronaldo.

For Filipino readers, the episode goes beyond numbers. It highlights the immense pride Filipinos feel for kababayans making their mark abroad — not through fame or fortune, but through loyalty, hard work, and character.

In a digital world often dominated by superstars and celebrity culture, it was a Filipina nanny who captured millions of views — and perhaps something even more powerful: collective admiration.

For one week, at least, the internet crowned its own unlikely MVP — and her name was Cory.
