From home to stage: Nic Chien and Lea Salonga bring a family affair to ‘Into the Woods’

For Nic Chien, stepping into the spotlight as Jack in the Manila staging of Into the Woods is more than just another theater role — it’s a continuation of a life surrounded by music, scripts, and stage lights. And this time, he’s sharing the experience with one of the country’s most celebrated performers: his mother, Lea Salonga, who plays the Witch.

While the thought of working alongside a Broadway legend might intimidate most young actors, Nic admits the dynamic feels surprisingly familiar.

“The rehearsal room has always been like a second home for me,” he shared. “I grew up tagging along to my mom’s rehearsals, so seeing her in work mode is nothing new. Honestly, it’s not that different from home.”

The mother-and-son duo rarely share scenes in the show, which Nic says keeps the experience light. “It’s basically like we’re just going to work at the same place, but on different floors,” he joked.

And while Lea is known for her discipline and artistry, she’s not one to give unsolicited acting advice on set. “My mom has made it clear that’s strictly Tita Chari’s job,” Nic said, referring to co-director Chari Arespacochaga. “Her role is to make sure I eat, stay hydrated, and sing in key.”

The musical boasts an impressive ensemble, with Eugene Domingo as Jack’s Mother, Mark Bautista as Rapunzel’s Prince, Nyoy Volante as The Baker, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante as The Baker’s Wife, Josh Dela Cruz as Cinderella’s Prince and the Wolf, Arielle Jacobs as Cinderella, Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Granny or the Giant, and Rody Vera as the Narrator, among others.

Behind the scenes, Tony Award winner Clint Ramos serves as the overall artistic and creative director, with production led by John and Joanna Echauz alongside Samsung Performing Arts Theater Executive Director Chris Mohnani.

For Nic, the project is more than just another credit on his résumé — it’s a reminder that theater has always been part of his DNA. “It’s not just about acting,” he reflected. “It’s about sharing a space where family and passion intersect.”

Into the Woods runs at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati until August 31.
