Freakier, funnier, and full of heart: ‘Freakier Friday’ wows early viewers

Lindsay Lohan in a red dress and Jamie Lee Curtis in a blue outfit strike playful poses against a colorful striped background promoting the movie Freakier Friday.

Disney’s long-awaited sequel Freakier Friday is already striking a chord with audiences, with early reactions calling it a feel-good triumph packed with humor, chaos, and surprising emotional depth.

More than two decades since Freaky Friday hit theaters in 2003, stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back — and according to first viewers, they haven’t missed a beat.

Entertainment host Jeff Conway praised the sequel on X, calling it “double the fun, twice the heart.” He added, “These 22 years later, Lindsay and Jamie Lee’s chemistry is still magic. A true delight that the entire family will enjoy.”

Entertainment writer Brandon Davis shared similar sentiments, admitting he was “howling” with laughter during the premiere screening. “Jamie Lee Curtis is having the time of her life, and it’s a blast to watch. It’s silly, it’s touching, and honestly, one of the most fun movie experiences I’ve had this year,” he wrote.

The film picks up years after the original, with Anna now a mom herself, juggling the complexities of blending families. A mysterious twist throws Anna, her mother Tess, her daughter, and her soon-to-be stepdaughter into a chaotic four-way body swap. Amid the confusion, heartfelt revelations surface, helping them understand one another in unexpected ways.

Early reactions say the film brings both nostalgia and freshness. Another viewer gushed, “Lindsay and Jamie Lee deliver hilarity and emotion in this funtastic sequel. I didn’t know how much I needed this movie. And Manny Jacinto? He’s a scene-stealer.”

The sequel also features a fresh cast of characters, including Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

Speaking to Variety, Curtis shared how much she’s learned from working with Lohan again. “She has taught me so much,” Curtis said. “She even had her team lighting her from either side of the camera. I thought, that’s genius. We’ve had so much fun together — we really love each other.”

The original Freaky Friday, based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, followed the hilarious and heartfelt body-swap journey of a mother and daughter who came to understand each other’s lives in unexpected ways. Now, Freakier Friday ups the stakes — and the laughter — in a new chapter for a new generation.
