Ken Fred “Kentoy” Segura
M’LANG, NORTH COTABATO – Former NCAA and Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) player Ken Fred “Kentoy” Segura was shot and killed in an ambush late Wednesday evening, sending shockwaves through the basketball community.
The 26-year-old shooting guard, originally from Digos, Davao del Sur, was gunned down while driving along the national highway in Barangay Pulang Lupa, M’lang.
According to the M’lang Municipal Police, Segura was behind the wheel of his car, accompanied by his nephew, when an unidentified vehicle suddenly blocked their path. Before they could react, an armed assailant stepped out and opened fire, striking Segura twice.
The gunman then stole Segura’s vehicle and used it as a getaway car, leaving the victim gravely wounded.
Bystanders and emergency responders rushed Segura to the nearest hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead a few hours later. His nephew, who survived the attack, is now cooperating with authorities in their investigation.
Police chase and arrest
Following the ambush, law enforcement launched an intensive manhunt for the suspect. Authorities later spotted a vehicle that matched the getaway car’s description. The driver managed to evade capture, but police successfully apprehended his companion, now considered a person of interest.
Authorities are investigating the motives behind the brazen attack, exploring angles including personal or professional conflicts.

The tragic killing of Ken Fred Segura has left the local basketball scene in shock and sorrow. A promising talent, Segura played in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for Arellano University before joining the MPBL, where he showcased his skills on the national stage.
