First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will serve as the Philippine representative to the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, which will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from February 11 to 13, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) confirmed on Friday.
PCO Acting Secretary Cesar Chavez clarified that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will not attend the event, stating that the First Lady will be the country’s sole representative at the prestigious gathering.
In anticipation of her participation, Araneta-Marcos shared photos on Facebook showing a preliminary meeting at her office, where discussions focused on preparations for her engagement at the summit. On her official Instagram account, she expressed excitement and nervousness upon receiving the invitation, emphasizing the event’s significance.
As part of her role, the First Lady noted that discussions included several memorandums of agreement (MOAs), including updates on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the Philippines and the UAE. This agreement aims to deepen economic ties, foster trade, and promote mutual prosperity between the two nations.
The World Governments Summit 2024 will be held under the theme “Shaping Future Governments.” It will bring together heads of state, policymakers, global thought leaders, and private sector representatives to address pressing global challenges. The summit seeks to enhance international cooperation, promote innovation, and inspire transformative governance strategies.
This year’s program will focus on shaping a better future for humanity through six main thematic areas:
- Effective governance and accountability
- Financing the future and the global economy
- Climate crisis mitigation and resilient cities
- Human-centric development and capacity building
- Global health transformations
- Emerging frontiers and the future
With the world facing complex economic uncertainties, climate change, and health crises, the WGS is a crucial platform for governments to exchange ideas, adopt best practices, and forge international partnerships.
As the Philippines’ official delegate, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos is expected to highlight the country’s initiatives in economic development, climate resilience, and governance reforms while also exploring opportunities for further bilateral cooperation with global leaders.
