First Gen Corp., the Philippines’ largest provider of clean energy, is in active discussions to supply at least 180 megawatts (MW) of renewable power to data centers across the country, according to Carlos Lorenzo Vega, president and chief operating officer of First Gen Energy Solutions, Inc.
In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Vega revealed that the company currently supplies 17.4 MW of clean energy to 11 data center facilities nationwide. He emphasized that data centers, which operate 24/7, are increasingly turning to renewable energy to meet their massive power needs and reduce their carbon footprint.
Vega also noted the ongoing challenge posed by the country’s energy mix, which remains heavily reliant on traditional fossil fuel sources. “There are data centers willing to purchase renewable energy certificates. They may still use coal, but they make sure to offset it with RE certificates,” he said during the Data Center Association of the Philippines (DCAP) Executive Roundtable Summit 2025 held in Makati City on April 29.
Also speaking at the event, Arlene Soriano, assistant vice president at First Gen Corp., highlighted the growing demand from the data center industry as a significant test for the energy sector. “Data centers are heavy energy users, and their electricity consumption is one of the main drivers of their carbon emissions,” she explained. “This high consumption also results in increased operating expenses.”
Soriano added that First Gen is strategically positioning itself as a key clean energy supplier to the fast-growing data center market.
The company currently operates a 3.6-gigawatt (GW) portfolio composed of natural gas, geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar energy assets. It has committed to expanding this portfolio to 13 GW of clean energy by 2030.
