Fire in Tondo burns for 10 hours, displaces families

A fire that broke out in Barangay 105, Happyland, Tondo, Manila on Saturday night, September 13, was declared out after almost 10 hours of firefighting. The blaze, which started past 8 p.m., reached Task Force Bravo and required at least 28 firetrucks to respond.

Residents rushed to save what they could. Ashley Canatuan, in tears, held on to an image of Santo Niño, praying that her small Piso Wi-Fi business would be spared. Cammy Capellan managed to carry out essential belongings and her pet dog, Shamay.

“Kasi, mga mahahalagang bagay po, kailangan iligtas natin, lalo na yung mga document, mga paper, yung mga hayop, kailangan din kasi may buhay rin eh,” she said.

Fire Senior Inspector Ronald Lim, Station 1 Commander of BFP Manila, said firefighters faced challenges due to limited water supply and narrow alleys that made access difficult. The fire was declared out at 6:02 a.m. Sunday.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, three people were injured but no deaths were reported. Authorities are still assessing the number of affected families and damaged houses. Displaced residents are temporarily staying in the barangay covered gym and nearby schools.
