The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) celebrated the Lunar New Year with an awards ceremony on Wednesday night, recognizing notable Filipinos for their contributions to society and marking the start of the 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic relations.
The event, held at Golden Bay Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City and led by FFCCCII president Dr. Cecilio K. Pedro, highlighted the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year, which falls in the year 4723 of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Among the honorees was former first lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, recognized for her role and for supporting late president Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. in establishing Philippines-China diplomatic relations in 1975. She was represented by her daughter, Sen. Imee Marcos, who delivered an inspirational speech and acknowledged the Romualdez family’s Chinese heritage, tracing their roots to Pei Ling Po, a Chinese immigrant who adopted the name Luis Romualdez after baptism during the Spanish colonial era.
National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, also the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Screenplay winner, was celebrated for his work as a writer, educator, and filmmaker. His award-winning film “Green Bones” draws inspiration from a Chinese belief symbolizing the goodness of the departed.
GMA 7 journalist Jessica Soho was honored for her integrity and excellence in journalism. She recently produced a documentary tracing her ancestry to her grandfather’s village in Guangdong, China.
Globally renowned designer Kenneth Cobonpue was recognized for elevating Philippine craftsmanship and industrial design on the international stage.
The awarding ceremony was graced by members of the diplomatic corps, public officials, and other distinguished guests, who gathered to celebrate the momentous occasion. This event not only honored outstanding achievements but also highlighted the cultural and diplomatic ties between the Philippines and China.
Significantly, the celebration coincided with the upcoming 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic relations, set to be commemorated on June 5, 2025.
