Police in Metro Manila reported a drop in theft and robbery incidents over the 2025 holiday season, while cases of online scams increased.
NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said the number of thefts fell by around 18 percent, while robberies declined by over 4 percent compared to the same period last year.
She attributed the drop to increased police patrols and security measures implemented ahead of the holidays.
Conversely, online scammers have stepped up activity, taking advantage of holiday shoppers and internet users who may be more susceptible to clicking links or making transactions.
Asilo said many victims share complaints on social media rather than filing formal reports with the Anti-Cybercrime Unit, complicating investigations and legal action.
Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered law enforcement to intensify efforts against online scams, while approximately 100,000 personnel were deployed nationwide to ensure holiday security.
Authorities assured the public that, despite the rise in scams, no immediate security threats have been identified in Metro Manila, and police continue to monitor the situation for a safe New Year celebration.
