Far Eastern University shrugged off a shaky second set and powered past Adamson University, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 25-20, to secure the bronze medal in the Shakey’s Super League Unity Cup on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.
It marked the Lady Tamaraws’ third straight third-place finish in the tournament, but this one came with a renewed sense of grit and composure.
Faida Bakanke, Alyzza Devosora, and Jazzlyn Elarina paced FEU with 12 points each, while setter Tin Ubaldo orchestrated the offense with 21 excellent sets, helping the team rack up 48 attack points.
“We talked about bringing back the energy we had in the first set. We needed that momentum again because in the second set, our morale really dropped,” said FEU winger Gerz Petallo, who scored five of her eight points in the opening frame.
The Lady Tamaraws, fresh off winning the National Invitational Batangas leg last August 31, faced a late scare in the fourth set when Adamson closed in at 20-19 after a hammer from Francis Mordi.
But FEU regained control through timely hits from Cla Loresco and Bakanke, and Adamson’s costly errors sealed the match after two hours and nine minutes of play.
“This is a big deal for us. Even if it’s still bronze, we defended it. At least we didn’t end up with nothing. It’s a big boost to the team’s morale heading into the UAAP,” Petallo added.
League ambassador Shaina Nitura carried Adamson with 18 points built on 13 attacks, three blocks, and two aces. Mordi chipped in 13 points, while Lhouriz Tuddao added eight in the losing effort.
