Far Eastern University ruled three of four divisions in the UAAP Season 87 chess tournament at the Adamson University Gymnasium on Friday.
National champion Ruelle Canino, who saw action at the World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary in September, swept all her eight games to lead the Lady Junior Tams to the high school girls’ crown. She earned the MVP honors.
Canino’s teammate, April Joy Carlos, likewise won all her seven games.
FEU also dominated the women’s and boys’ divisions and finished third in the men’s division behind the University of Santo Tomas and the University of the Philippines.
The Lady Tams won all their games with top board player Mhage Sebastian bagging the MVP trophy. Her teammates are Vic Glysen Derotas (board 2), Franchesca Largo (board 3), Mary Joy Tan (board 4), Samantha Umayan (board 5), and Rhea Jean Canino (board 6).
“The team’s success is a testament (to) the players’ hard work, discipline, and determination,” said FEU coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, whose staff includes WGM Janelle Mae Frayna.
“This monumental triumph is also rooted (in) the generosity of FEU, especially FEU chairman Aurelio ‘Gigi’ Montinola, FEU president Juan Miguel Montinola, FEU athletics director Mark Oliver Molina, FEU-Diliman executive director Dr. Armi Cunanan-Yabut, and to their team manager, Atty. Ruel Canobas,” added Gonzales, the chief executive officer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines. (PNA)
