
Formula 1 cars are supposed to represent the cutting edge of automotive technology. But in 2027, the world’s fastest racing machines could face a problem more commonly associated with drivers nervously watching their fuel gauges.
They may not have enough range to finish a full Grand Prix.
In an ironic twist, Formula 1 is reportedly preparing to shorten some races next season because changes to its power-unit rules could leave cars unable to comfortably cover the traditional race distance with the fuel they can carry.
The issue stems from adjustments being made after the opening races of the 2026 season exposed problems with the new-generation power units.
F1 had initially pursued a roughly balanced contribution between electric power and the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 combustion engine. But the setup resulted in drivers having to dramatically manage their energy use and coast at certain points to keep their batteries sufficiently charged.
That produced the controversial “yo-yo racing” effect, where cars could behave unnaturally as drivers attempted to balance outright performance with energy management.
The response was to shift the power balance more heavily toward the combustion side for the following seasons.
Problem solved?
Not quite.
Giving the combustion engine a bigger role also means increasing the permitted fuel-flow rate. And that creates another headache: some cars apparently cannot carry enough gasoline to cover the usual Grand Prix distance without extreme fuel-saving.
In other words, Formula 1 may have effectively created its own version of range anxiety.
Why not simply install bigger fuel tanks?
That sounds like the obvious solution, but Formula 1 cars are packaged incredibly tightly.
Several teams reportedly planned to carry over their existing cars into 2027, meaning there simply isn’t enough space to accommodate significantly larger fuel tanks without redesigning major portions of the machinery.
And completely reworking a car isn’t exactly cheap, particularly under Formula 1’s cost restrictions.
So instead of making the tanks bigger, F1 could make the races smaller.
Reports cited in the source indicate plans are moving toward reducing the standard Grand Prix distance from roughly 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers.
Monaco would remain an exception. Its race already runs to around 260 kilometers because of the circuit’s unusually low average speeds.
The change may not sound dramatic on paper, but it would be noticeable.
At Silverstone, for example, the British Grand Prix could fall from 52 laps to 50 laps under the proposed distance.
For fans, the situation carries plenty of irony.
Formula 1 spent years developing increasingly sophisticated hybrid technology, only to potentially arrive at a point where its cars need shorter races because they cannot carry enough fuel to comfortably reach the finish under revised operating conditions.
The world’s fastest cars aren’t exactly going to be crawling toward a gas station with the warning light flashing.
But if the reported 290km plan pushes through, Formula 1 will effectively solve its latest engineering headache in one surprisingly simple way:
Move the finish line closer.
