Sen. Jinggoy Estrada asked the Sandiganbayan to allow him to post bail in a plunder case involving alleged irregular infrastructure allocations worth Php 573 million.
Estrada filed the seven-page petition before the anti-graft court’s Fifth Division on Wednesday, days after it denied his earlier motion asking the court to fix bail.
He argued that the evidence presented against him was not strong enough to warrant his continued detention while the case was being heard.
The senator asked the court to set a reasonable bail amount and order his release once he had posted the required bond.
The case stemmed from an alleged scheme involving budget insertions and project allocations under the Department of Public Works and Highways’ infrastructure program for 2025.
Prosecutors alleged that the arrangement was used to channel Php 573 million to Estrada through several infrastructure projects.
Estrada also faced two graft charges arising from the same allegations before the Sandiganbayan.
The senator had repeatedly denied involvement in the alleged scheme and maintained that the accusations against him lacked basis.
