Barangay Ginebra opened its preseason campaign in style, dismantling a retooled Terrafirma squad, 108-81, in a tune-up match Wednesday at the Upper Deck Sports Center in Ortigas.
The Gin Kings, coming off a Philippine Cup semifinal exit last July, looked eager to bounce back as rookie Sonny Estil and veteran big man Norbert Torres made strong first impressions under coach Tim Cone.
Estil, the 11th overall pick in the recent draft and MVP of the Rookie Combine mini-tournament, showed poise beyond his years in his unofficial debut. Torres, signed as a free agent, immediately gave Ginebra added muscle in the paint.
For Terrafirma, the contest also marked the first run for its reshuffled roster. Former Gin King Paul Garcia suited up for the Dyip after being signed last week, while ex-La Salle standout Prince Rivero also joined the fray. Garcia, who spent his rookie season riding Ginebra’s bench, was among those trying to prove themselves with their new team.
The Dyip enter the season under fresh leadership, with longtime assistant and team manager Ronald Tubid elevated to head coach. The franchise made significant roster moves in hopes of turning around its fortunes after years at the bottom of the standings.
For Ginebra, the tune-up was more than just a warm-up—it was a statement of intent. With a core still intact and new pieces blending in, the Gin Kings are aiming for nothing less than another Finals berth when the new PBA season tips off.
