Embiid sidelined as Sixers suffer heartbreaking loss to Nets

In a nail-biting finish on Saturday night, the Philadelphia 76ers fell 105-103 to the Brooklyn Nets. With the clock winding down, Brooklyn’s Nic Claxton secured an offensive rebound off a missed three by Keon Johnson and tipped the ball in for the game-winning basket.

The play came after Paul George, who many expected to contest the rebound, appeared to lack the necessary urgency—leaving the Sixers just short of victory.

A tactical shift in the final minutes
Amidst the chaos of the closing moments, star center Joel Embiid was notably absent from the floor. Head coach Nick Nurse had opted to rest Embiid for the final quarter, instead turning to Guerschon Yabusele to anchor the center position.

“Our guys were clicking in the final stretch, and we felt it was best to let them ride that momentum,” Nurse explained after the game. Embiid, who started the match, finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists over 31 minutes, while Yabusele contributed eight rebounds in 23 minutes.

Lingering knee injury raises concerns
The decision to sit Embiid in the crucial final period comes as the center has openly struggled with an ongoing left knee issue. Earlier in the week, he admitted that his performance had noticeably declined compared to a year ago, hinting that surgical intervention might soon be necessary.

“I’m not playing like I used to, and it’s incredibly frustrating,” Embiid remarked, suggesting that fixing the problem was essential for his return to form.

On Sunday afternoon, the 76ers confirmed they consulted with medical experts to explore alternative treatment options for his knee. With his current regimen yielding slight improvement, uncertainty looms over whether Embiid can play at his usual level—or even continue this season at full capacity.

Seasonal Impact and Future Implications
Embiid’s diminished output has not gone unnoticed. In just 19 games this season, he’s averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks—a steep drop from his previous season’s numbers of 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 39 games.

His struggles extend beyond scoring; he failed to find his rhythm from three-point range, going 0 for 6, and his overall defensive presence was lacking. Coach Nurse said, “He’s at his best when driving to the basket and protecting the rim, but he isn’t as effective on the perimeter.”

As Philadelphia continues to fight for a play-in spot, many now question whether it might be time to consider ending Embiid’s season to focus on his long-term health. With postseason aspirations already looking slim, the Sixers might benefit from bolstering their future roster through a lottery pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Even teammate Paul George weighed in with a wry remark postgame—jokingly advising, “Drugs help”—though it remains unclear if his comment was purely in jest or carried a grain of grave concern. As the season progresses, the looming question remains: can the 76ers resolve Embiid’s persistent knee issues to salvage their campaign?
