The legal team of Vice President Sara Duterte said it will follow the House of Representatives’ plenary deliberations on her impeachment from a distance, as lawmakers prepare to vote on the matter.
Michael Poa, spokesperson of Duterte’s defense panel, said the group would not attend the proceedings in person and would instead observe developments remotely.
He added that the camp was refraining from making projections on the possible outcome of the vote, including whether the required threshold would be met.
Under the Constitution, at least 106 out of the 318 members of the House must vote in favor of impeachment for the case to be elevated to the Senate.
Once approved, the Articles of Impeachment will be transmitted to the upper chamber, which will convene as an impeachment court.
The House committee on justice had earlier endorsed a report combining two verified complaints filed by Joel Saballa and Nathaniel Cabrera, citing several grounds for impeachment.
These included alleged violations of the Constitution, as well as accusations of bribery, graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust and other serious offenses.
Poa said Duterte is prepared to take part in the Senate trial if the case progresses, while Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson said he would resist any attempt to prevent the chamber from fulfilling its role as an impeachment court.
