Ronee Dungca made an impressive debut in the ICTSI Junior Philippine Golf Tour (JPGT) Series, capturing the girls’ 7-10 division title at the Riviera Golf Club in Silang, Cavite on Wednesday.
The nine-year-old standout from OB Montessori in Angeles, Pampanga, opened with a strong 73 and followed it up with an 80, finishing with a 36-hole total of 153. Her performance earned her the top spot in her division, seven shots ahead of Tyra Garingalao, who carded a 78 for a 160 total. Penelope Sy and Ziyu Liu both posted 175 to share third place.
“I feel good, happy. I feel a lot of things,” said Dungca. “But what I liked most was meeting new people and not getting a bad score.”
With two more legs remaining in the Luzon series, Dungca has a chance to qualify for the national finals if she continues her strong play at Pradera Verde and Pinewoods. A sweep would give her a maximum of 45 points, potentially enough to break into the Top 4.
“Yes, I will play at Pradera Verde and Pinewoods,” she confirmed.
Only the top four players from the Luzon series will earn a spot in the finals, where they will face off against the best from the Visayas-Mindanao circuit in a Ryder Cup-style competition at The Country Club from October 7 to 10.
In the boys’ 7-10 division, Zoji Edoc continued his dominance with a convincing 12-shot victory. Edoc shot a 76 in the final round for a two-day total of 155. Asher Abad and Halo Pangilinan tied at 167, with Abad taking second place via countback after finishing with five straight pars. James Padron placed fourth with a total of 168 after an 83.
“I just kept my cool and focused on my shot management – it really came down to mindset,” said Edoc, who previously won at Sherwood Hills and was runner-up at both Eagle Ridge and Splendido Taal. He now tops the division standings with 54 points, ahead of Zach Guico’s 45.
Abad added 12 points for his runner-up finish, bringing his total to 42, while Pangilinan’s 10 points pushed him to 40 – both still very much in contention for a finals spot.
In the boys’ 11-14 division, Zianbeau Edoc, Zoji’s older brother, clinched his first-ever JPGT title. He fired consecutive 78s for a winning total of 156. Race Manhit matched Zianbeau’s final-round 78 to finish at 163, edging out Jacob Casuga via countback for second place.
In the girls’ 11-14 division, Mona Sarines continued her winning ways, securing her third title following triumphs at Splendido Taal and Caliraya Springs. She remains atop the division rankings with 57 points, just ahead of her twin sister Lisa, who has 54.
