MANILA – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has introduced its Family Water Filtration Kit as an alternative source of drinking water during emergencies, particularly amid concerns over possible water shortages caused by Super El Niño and other climate-related disasters.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian demonstrated the filtration kit during a Malacañang press briefing, explaining how the device can filter water and help provide an additional drinking water source for families affected by calamities.
During the live demonstration, Gatchalian showed how the kit works and invited Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro to taste the filtered water.
DSWD Assistant Secretary Leo Quintilla of the Resource and Logistics Management (RLM) and National Resource and Logistics Management Bureau officer-in-charge Director Jun Eso also participated in the demonstration.
The initiative forms part of the agency’s efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and provide practical solutions to communities facing disruptions in their water supply.
With climate change and the potential effects of Super El Niño threatening water availability, the DSWD emphasized the importance of having alternative water sources during emergencies.
The agency presented the filtration kit as an additional resource for households and communities during disasters, although its effectiveness in producing safe drinking water depends on the quality of the source water and the kit’s filtration capabilities.
