The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Thursday handed out 337 family food packs to residents displaced by Tropical Storm Basyang in Surigao del Sur.

DSWD’s Caraga office said 211 packs were delivered to evacuees in Lingig, while 126 went to Hinatuan.

In coordination with the Surigao City government, the agency also provided 37 ready-to-eat meals to stranded passengers at Eva Macapagal Terminal Port.

Sea travel across the Caraga Region remained suspended due to rough waters caused by the storm.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, Basyang was located over the coastal waters of Anda, Bohol, packing sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center, according to Pagasa.

Classes and government work were suspended throughout the region, with preemptive evacuations carried out in flood- and landslide-prone areas.

DSWD-13 said its teams remain on high alert to ensure timely delivery of assistance to affected communities.

Authorities urged residents to stay indoors and follow local advisories as Basyang continues to affect the region.
