The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has begun distributing hundreds of family food packs to vendors and families affected by the fire that devastated the Sorsogon City Public Market on Saturday, October 24.
According to the latest figures, at least 415 individuals were affected by the incident, including five fatalities.
Each DSWD family food pack contains enough food supplies to sustain a family of five for two to three days, providing immediate assistance to those whose livelihoods were disrupted by the blaze.
Meanwhile, personnel from DSWD Bicol’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program are coordinating with the bereaved families to facilitate the delivery of financial and other necessary assistance.
The Sorsogon provincial and city governments, along with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), are also distributing additional relief supplies to affected residents and vendors.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian has directed the agency to ensure that families affected by the fire receive timely assistance and support as they recover from the incident.
The relief operations are being carried out in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to provide immediate assistance to communities affected by disasters.
Authorities and social welfare personnel continue to coordinate relief efforts to address the immediate needs of the affected families and help vendors recover from their losses.
