The Department of Public Works and Highways – South Manila District Engineering Office (DPWH-SMDEO) has begun construction of a new drainage system aimed at easing persistent flooding in the Baseco Compound, located in Manila’s Port Area.
In an update posted Friday, the DPWH-National Capital Region (NCR) revealed that the PHP39 million project is now 15% complete, with work expected to continue until December 2025.
Once finished, the 560-linear-meter drainage system is projected to greatly alleviate flooding, particularly during heavy rains. The agency emphasized that beyond flood control, the project will also improve road conditions and enhance public safety by reducing health risks associated with stagnant floodwater.
The DPWH highlighted that the area has long suffered from the absence of an effective drainage system, which has made Baseco vulnerable to chronic flooding. This project is part of the agency’s effort to provide resilient infrastructure under the Marcos administration’s “Build Better More” program, spearheaded by DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan.
In a separate update, the DPWH – Quezon City 1st District Engineering Office announced scheduled reblocking works along Mindanao Avenue Underpass.
Partial closure of the underpass’s southbound lane will begin at 10 p.m. on July 4 and last until 5 a.m. on July 7. The northbound lane will follow with closures from 10 p.m. on July 11 to 10 p.m. on July 14. These repairs aim to restore deteriorated pavement for smoother and safer travel.
Despite the closures, other lanes will remain open to all types of vehicles. However, motorists are warned of potential traffic delays and are encouraged to take alternative routes during the repair period.
