MANILA – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) are working to secure funding for the rehabilitation of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and the acquisition of additional trains to improve commuter services.
In a statement, the DOTr said the agencies are taking steps to obtain the necessary budget for upgrading the railway system and purchasing new train sets.
The department acknowledged that the arrival of new trains could take three years or longer, prompting officials to explore alternative measures to improve operations while awaiting additional rolling stock.
The DOTr said these measures aim to reduce passenger queues at stations and address the transportation needs of daily commuters.
The planned rehabilitation and procurement efforts are part of the government’s initiative to improve the reliability and capacity of the LRT-2 system.
The department did not specify the amount of funding being sought, the number of additional trains planned, or the timetable for the rehabilitation work.
