DOT warns tourism businesses: No price hikes during calamities

The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Saturday called on accredited tourism establishments to refrain from raising prices during times of calamity and emergencies.

The agency issued the warning following reports of some businesses engaging in overpricing and unfair practices amid disruptions caused by recent storms.

“The DOT reminds all tourism enterprises, particularly those accredited by the department, to uphold responsible, considerate, and transparent business practices during times of calamity or emergency,” the department said. It specifically advised accredited establishments “not to impose unreasonable price increase for accommodation, restaurant services, or other tourism-related offerings.”

The DOT also encouraged tourism businesses to implement flexible policies for booking cancellations and re-bookings, especially for guests whose travel plans were disrupted by the typhoons.

“It is our shared duty to ensure that travelers, evacuees, and responders find safety, comfort, and dignity in our establishments during times of crisis,” the statement read. “Overpricing or denial of service in these circumstances runs counter the spirit of hospitality and the principles that define the Filipino brand of service that we take pride of.”

The DOT said it is coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure accommodation facilities adhere to fair pricing and ethical business standards.
