CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Tourism in Northern Mindanao (DOT-10) is looking to develop Initao, Misamis Oriental, into a new diving destination following the reported discovery of a rare marine species during a recent underwater exploration.
DOT-10 promotions head Ivy Guantero said Tuesday that details of the discovery would be unveiled during the three-day Misamis Oriental Dive Festival (MisOr Divefest), tentatively scheduled to begin on November 12, 2026.
“The discovery is expected to further enhance Misamis Oriental’s growing potential as a marine tourism destination, particularly for scuba diving, underwater photography and macro photography,” Guantero said.
She said the newly explored dive site in Initao could attract more divers, underwater photographers and marine enthusiasts. However, further information about the species and its significance will be presented during the festival.
The event is expected to feature diving activities in several coastal areas of Misamis Oriental, including Gingoog City, Medina, Talisayan, Laguindingan, Balingoan and Initao.
Organizers are also seeking financial assistance from the Misamis Oriental Sangguniang Panlalawigan to support the festival and promote the province’s underwater tourism attractions.
Governor Juliette Uy has expressed support for the initiative and requested the provincial board to approve funding for the event.
The festival is proposed to be held on the fifth floor of SM CDO Downtown, although organizers have yet to finalize the venue and schedule.
The upcoming MisOr Divefest will mark the second staging of the provincial diving festival following its inaugural event in 2025.
The initiative forms part of DOT-10’s efforts to expand diving tourism in Northern Mindanao, where Camiguin is already recognized for its established dive sites.
Tourism stakeholders expect the festival to attract more visitors, encourage marine conservation and generate additional livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.
Officials said Initao’s potential as a diving destination could further strengthen Misamis Oriental’s tourism industry, particularly if scientific assessments confirm the significance of the newly discovered marine species.
