The Department of Health (DOH) issued a warning urging the public to be cautious of heat-related illnesses as the heat index in the National Capital Region (NCR) is expected to reach up to 46 degrees Celsius through Tuesday.
In an advisory on Monday, the DOH said that state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has classified temperatures between 33 and 41 degrees Celsius as “extreme caution,” while a heat index of 42 to 51 degrees Celsius falls under the “danger” category. PAGASA also predicts similarly dangerous conditions in areas such as Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, and Olongapo City.
“Ang ganitong mga temperatura ay maaaring humantong sa pamumulikat at pagkahapo na may mga sintomas tulad ng pagkapagod, pagkahilo, sakit ng ulo, pagsusuka, at pagkahilo,” the DOH emphasized.
If left untreated, these conditions could escalate to heat stroke, a life-threatening medical emergency characterized by confusion, unconsciousness, seizures, or even death, the DOH added.
To mitigate the risks, the DOH recommended that individuals experiencing symptoms seek shelter in cool, well-ventilated areas, remove outer clothing, and apply a cold compress or ice pack to the head, neck, armpits, pulse points, and groin.
For those who remain conscious, the DOH advised drinking cool water slowly and frequently. In severe cases, immediate medical attention is necessary, either by contacting emergency services or transporting the person to a hospital.
Additionally, the DOH urged the public to take preventive measures by staying hydrated, avoiding beverages like iced tea, soda, coffee, and alcohol; and limiting outdoor activities between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. It also recommended wearing light, loose-fitting clothing; and using hats, umbrellas, and sunscreen for further protection.
