DOE urges Filipinos to switch off lights for Earth hour 2025

The Department of Energy (DOE) is urging Filipinos to turn off non-essential lights and appliances on Saturday as part of Earth Hour 2025, a global movement raising awareness on climate change and environmental conservation.

With the theme “Switch Off and Secure Water for All,” Earth Hour will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The DOE also emphasized the interdependence of energy and water, encouraging conservation efforts for both.

“Using energy judiciously is not just about reducing consumption—it is about preserving life itself. Every watt saved is a drop of water protected, reinforcing the delicate balance of our environment,” said DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla.

Lotilla highlighted that electricity production requires water for cooling thermal power plants, hydropower generation, and water treatment and distribution. Reducing energy use not only lowers emissions but also helps preserve vital resources for future generations.

The annual Earth Hour initiative encourages individuals, businesses, and communities to take small yet impactful actions toward sustainability. In 2024, the Philippines saved 132.11 megawatts of energy during the one-hour event.
