It’s win or go home for Gilas Pilipinas.
The national men’s basketball team faces Iraq in a high-stakes showdown for the last playoff berth in Group D of the 31st FIBA Asia Cup. Tip-off happens Saturday afternoon (Manila time) at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia — and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Both squads are 0-2 after falling to Chinese Taipei and New Zealand. The winner grabs the third spot in Group D and earns the right to battle the second-place team in Group C in the knockout crossover round.
Gilas came painfully close to victory on Friday, rallying from an 18-point hole before bowing to the Tall Blacks, 94-86. Justin Brownlee was nothing short of sensational, dropping a tournament-best 37 points, while Dwight Ramos added 19 in a spirited second-half surge that sliced New Zealand’s lead to just three, 85-82, with three minutes left.
But experience won out, as the world’s No. 22 ranked team held its ground in the final stretch.
Coach Tim Cone didn’t hide his frustration. “We’re disappointed, but the tournament is not over for us,” he said. “We have a big game against Iraq and we’re going to fight to get into the next round.”
Cone’s message to his players was clear — no sulking, no surrender. “We just need to keep battling, keep our heads moving forward. Don’t sink because of these last two losses… there’s still more to do.”
For Gilas, Saturday’s game isn’t just another fixture — it’s survival. Win, and the dream stays alive. Lose, and it’s the long flight home.
