Maya is pushing digital payments deeper into the country’s most underserved areas by enabling electronic electricity bill payments for residential customers of the National Power Corporation under its Small Power Utilities Group, a move aimed at modernizing collections and improving access to essential services in off-grid and missionary communities.
Under the initiative, SPUG residential customers will soon be able to settle their electricity bills through Maya’s digital platform, easing long-standing dependence on manual and over-the-counter payment methods.
For households in geographically isolated areas, the shift offers a more convenient and reliable way to pay, aligning with the government’s broader push for digitalization and improved ease of doing business.
NAPOCOR supplies electricity to communities not connected to the main power grid, where power generation is decentralized and access to physical payment centers can be limited.
Despite these challenges, mobile connectivity is already present in many of these areas, making digital payments a practical solution to streamline collections while enhancing customer experience.
For the state-owned utility, the partnership supports its ongoing efforts to modernize operations and deliver more responsive public service. Jericho Jonas B. Nograles, President and CEO of NAPOCOR, said expanding payment options is crucial to improving service delivery, particularly in remote areas where traditional processes remain the norm.
He noted that digital payments help cut down manual transactions and make bill settlement easier for households.
Maya echoed this focus on everyday utility needs. Shailesh Baidwan, Group President of Maya, said the collaboration reflects the company’s goal of making digital financial services accessible for essential services, extending the convenience and efficiency of cashless payments to communities with limited options.
Beyond simplifying bill payments, the initiative highlights a shared push to modernize public services through technology, supporting inclusive growth, operational efficiency, and wider access to essential utilities nationwide.
Through SPUG, NAPOCOR operates power facilities in hundreds of communities across Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao, serving nearly one million households. Many of these areas have long relied on manual bill collection, underscoring how digital payment channels can play a key role in strengthening service delivery at the edges of the national power grid.
