The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it is closely tracking developments in Venezuela following reports that President Nicolás Maduro has been taken into custody by United States authorities.
DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona said Manila is monitoring the situation and called on all parties involved to pursue peaceful means and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
She said the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá, which has non-resident jurisdiction over Venezuela, has issued a safety advisory for Filipinos currently in the country.
The embassy, Escalona added, is prepared to extend assistance to ensure the welfare and security of Filipinos should conditions deteriorate.
In a separate notice, the Philippine Embassy in Colombia advised Filipinos in Venezuela to remain vigilant, stay indoors when necessary, and identify safe areas in case of emergencies.
Filipinos were also urged to closely follow verified news reports and keep emergency contact information readily available.
DFA data showed that 74 Filipinos are presently residing in Venezuela as the political situation there continues to unfold.
