The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday voiced alarm over the worsening situation between the United States and Venezuela, urging all sides to uphold international law and avoid further escalation.
In a statement, the DFA said Manila was concerned about the impact of recent developments on regional stability and the broader rules-based international order.
While noting Washington’s stated security concerns, the department stressed core principles of international law, including respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The Philippines called on the parties involved to observe the United Nations Charter, exercise restraint, and work toward restoring peace and order in Venezuela.
The DFA also underscored the need to ensure the safety and welfare of civilians, including Filipinos living in Venezuela and nearby countries.
Tensions rose after US President Donald Trump announced a military operation that resulted in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in Caracas, with Maduro later transferred to the United States to face charges.
Philippine officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and confirmed that more than 70 Filipinos in Venezuela are safe, according to the Philippine Embassy in Colombia.
